Belviq Cancer

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration requested that Eisai Inc, the manufacturer of Belviq and Belviq XR also known under the generic name lorcaserin be pulled from the U.S. market as clinical trials conducted in January 2020 showed that patients taking this popular drug for weight loss are likely to develop cancer. The preliminary safety data was concerning and led to a recall in February 2020. The FDA urges patients to stop taking lorcaserin and speak with their healthcare providers about different measures for their weight loss program.

What is Belviq?

Belviq is classified as a weight loss drug, and one of the first that has been proven to help people keep their weight off without increasing their risk of developing a heart condition. At least that is what the conclusion of a 12,000 patient, five year study conducted by the Japanese manufacturer Eisai Inc determined after the FDA required them to do so to get the drug approved.

The FDa analyzed the results of this study and found that 7.7% of patients in the study taking Belviq were diagnosed with cancer, which is just a tick higher than the 7.1% who received the same cancer diagnosis after taking placebo pills.

What Cancers Were Reported from Belviq?

The FDA said in its report that a wide range of cancers were diagnosed in patients, but the most reports in patients taking Belviq were pancreatic, colorectal and lung cancer. The FDA says that patients have only seen an increased risk after using the drug for a prolonged period of time. No special screening is recommended at this time for anyone who used Belviq or Lorcaserin for a brief time.

Eisai Inc did voluntarily remove their drug from the U.S. market, but firmly believe that Belviq’ benefits outweigh its risks. This drug was intended for adults with a body mass index of 30 and a BMI of 27 who also have other special conditions for heart risk, including high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or Type 2 diabetes.

The extended-release version of the drug, Belviq XR, has also been removed from the market per the FDA.

I am Taking Belviq, Belviq XR, or Lorcaserin: How do I Dispose of My Unused Pills?

The FDA says it is best to dispose of any unused drugs at a drug take back facility. You can find one near you here.

If you cannot find a location near you or get to one, there are other ways to dispose of your unused meds.

  1. Mix the pills with dirt, coffee, cat litter, etc. Never crush the pills.
  2. Put the mixture in a sealed plastic bag or tupperware container.
  3. Dispose of the bag or container in your household garbage.
  4. Remove any personal information or labels from your pill bottle and then throw it away in the garbage or recycle.

You will want to speak with your healthcare provider about possible side effects and what you should be on the lookout for. If you need to report any side effects, you can report them to the FDA here.
