Hair Straighteners Contain Dangerous, Cancer-causing Chemicals

Our Mass Torts Attorneys at Whittel & Melton are looking into accusations that women who used hair straightening products from L’Oréal, SoftSheen Carson, Dark and Lovely, and other brands had a higher chance of developing uterine cancer. Hair straightener treatments may contain hazardous chemicals that raise the risk for uterine and ovarian cancers, particularly in Black or Hispanic women who may use the products more frequently.

NIH Study Reveals that Black Women May be Disproportionately Impacted Due to Higher Use

The “Sister Study” from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that women who reported using chemical hair straightening goods/relaxers had a larger chance of developing uterine cancer than women who did not. Other hair chemicals, such as bleach, hair color, highlights, Balayage, perms, or permanent waves, that the women stated as using were not connected to uterine cancer, according to the study.

The study data includes 33,497 U.S. women ages 35-74 who were tracked for almost 11 years. During this time period, 378 uterine cancer cases were established.

Frequent users—defined as those who used these products at least four or more times in the preceding year—were two times more likely to eventually develop uterine cancer than women who did not use hair straightening chemicals.

With 65,950 projected new cases in 2022, uterine cancer is the most prevalent cancer of the female reproductive system and accounts for about 3% of all new cancer cases. According to studies, uterine cancer frequency rates have been on the incline in the United States, especially among Black women.

According to the “Sister Study,” self-identified Black women made up almost 60% of the participants who admitted to using straighteners in the previous year. Even though the study did not identify a di erence in uterine cancer incidence according to race, the damaging health e ects may be more severe for Black women due to a higher frequency of usage.

The results are in line with earlier research that suggested women’s use hair straightener chemicals may raise their chance of developing malignancies linked to hormones.

Several substances found in hair straightening chemicals have been linked to uterine cancer risk including bisphenol A, metals, parabens, and formaldehyde. Chemical exposure from using hair straightening goods may be more concerning than from using other personal care or grooming products due to higher scalp absorption from using hair products, especially straighteners/relaxers, which may be aggravated by burns, blisters, sores, and lacerations from using them.

You May Be Eligible to Join a Mass Torts Suit

If you su ered harm or developed uterine or ovarian cancer as a result of using a chemical hair straightening product, you may qualify to join a mass tort lawsuit, which di ers from a class action lawsuit. In contrast to a class-action lawsuit, which would divide damages equally among all parties harmed, mass torts allow victims of defective products or corporate negligence to retain their individual rights to compensation. This enables defendants to get the most money possible from their legal action.

You can use the following criteria to determine if you meet the requirements to join a mass tort involving the health a ects you experienced after using chemical hair relaxers:

  • Used chemical straightening products multiple times a year
  • Began using chemical straightening products as a child/adolescents
  • Used any of the chemical straightening products mentioned above
  • Have been diagnosed with a reproductive cancer, like ovarian or uterine cancer AND do not have a pre-existing genetic predisposition

As always, it is in your best interest to speak with a lawyer regarding your rights to compensation. Our Mass Torts Attorneys at Whittel & Melton specialize in chemical hair straightening lawsuits, so we can accurately establish your eligibility even if you do not feel that you fulfill the requirements.
