We are Here to Help Victims of BSA Sex Abuse Tell Their Stories

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) was founded on the principle to teach and mold America’s youth into ethical and moral adults through Scout Law and the Scout Oath. For more than a century, tens of millions of children have gone through the ranks of the BSA, and while some have had positive experiences, including four U.S. presidents, others have fallen victims to sexual abuse by those they trusted to make sure nothing bad happened to them.

In recent years, secrets of scoutmasters and other leaders among the BSA abusing children has been revealed. These leaders violated the trust and friendship they created and have left their victims with nothing but memories of monstrous acts. Our Boy Scouts of America Sex Abuse Attorneys at Whittel & Melton want to help abuse survivors tell their stories and help put an end to their suffering. We want all victims to be assured that we are supportive and committed to protecting their privacy. Telling what happened to you is no easy feat, which is why we are here to help you hold the BSA accountable for their grave injustice of failing to protect you.

Kill the Secrets of the BSA

The Boy Scouts of America was formed in 1910 and since its founding, the organization has kept secret files called the “Perversion Files” that document decades of sexual abuse. These hidden records list the names of known alleged sexual abusers and predators dating all the way back to 1919. The BSA kept these secret files and held them close so that the public would never know of the horrific abuse happening in mostly every single BSA program, including Cub Scouts, Sea Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing, Learning for Life, and Exploring.

Investigations Into the “Perversion Files”

In 2012, police were able to review the contents of 1,600 secret files from 1970-1991. Their findings show that BSA officials chose to silence cases of sexual abuse by telling abusers to resign quietly and in exchange no police will be notified of their horrific actions. In a majority of cases, abusers within the Boy Scouts of America were never reported to authorities. However, investigators finally got to review some of these files in 2012.

Due to the fact that the BSA was negligent in reporting cases of sex abuse within the organization, they allowed numerous sexual predators walk away without consequence to potentially harm more children.

You can view the database of alleged sexual abusers here. This data is compiled from confidential BSA files that were submitted as evidence in court cases.

BSA Bankruptcy

The Boy Scouts of America filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February 2020. It is very important for all abuse survivors to come forward at this time as the window of opportunity to tell your side of the story is closing soon. The bankruptcy court has set a deadline of November 16, 2020 for abuse victims to seek justice by filing claims against the BSA. After this deadline, those victims of BSA sexual abuse may not be given the chance to hold the organization accountable for allowing this abuse to happen.
