Zephyrhills Child in Critical Condition Following Freak Stroller Accident in New York

In 2004, a child died from strangulation after getting caught between the seat and tray of a stroller. Since this incident occurred, numerous recalls for certain stroller models that pose a risk to babies and small children have been recalled. This is why parents, nannies, babysitters and any other person taking care of a child must exercise caution when using a stroller, as all kinds of accidents can happen even if the stroller is not defective.

More recently, a Central Florida father and pastor took a walk with two of his children in a stroller when the stroller rolled into a canal while the kids were still strapped inside.

The father jumped into the canal and tried to keep the stroller above water until help could arrive.

Both of the children required CPR after being pulled out. One of the children remains in critical condition.

Police claim the man looked away for a minute when the tragic accident occurred.

While most potentially hazardous baby and child strollers have been recalled, some of these may still be in use. Even if you do not have a recalled baby stroller, you should keep the following safety tips in mind when out with a baby or child.

  • Never leave a child in a baby stroller alone or unattended. As the above accident shows, looking away for mere seconds can cause catastrophic injuries.
  • Always continuously check the model of your stroller to make sure it is not one that has been recalled.
  • Never put more weight in a stroller than the manufacturer recommends.
  • Before placing a child in a stroller, read the safety pamphlet that comes with it.
  • Keep a child restrained with the safety belt or harness when placing a child in a stroller.
  • Do not lean on or put weight on the stroller handlebars, as this could cause the stroller to unexpectedly tip.
  • If using a jog stroller, make sure the frame-locking mechanism is working properly. If it’s not, this could cause the stroller to collapse. Additionally, when you stop, make sure to use the parking brake.
  • Make sure you use the stroller for its intended purpose – transportation. It is not uncommon for children to fall asleep while in a stroller, but do not use the stroller as a replacement for a bed or crib.
  • When you are done using the stroller, make sure the child is fully out of the stroller before attempting to fold it. Keep the child away from the stroller while you are folding it to avoid injuries.
