Hernando County DUI Accident Victim Lawyer :: Intoxicated Weeki Wachee Man Almost Crashes Into Median

November 12, 2013

A 65-year-old Weeki Wachee man with a BAC of .231 almost crashed his vehicle into a median Thursday, according to Hernando County deputies.

The man was charged with driving under the influence.

According to the arrest report, the man was spotted driving northbound on Commercial Way around 2:30 p.m. and could not maintain his lane, almost crashing into the median.

Deputies attempted to pull the man over, however he tried to ignore them first but later stopped his vehicle.

Police claim the man admitted to consuming four glasses of wine.

Man Arrested for DUI

The man was transported to Hernando County Jail where he was asked to provide two breath samples to determine his blood alcohol. Deputies said he agreed and blew a .231 and .218.

His bond was set at $500.

Records indicate the man was previously convicted for a DUI in Hernando County back in May 2009.

While no one was injured in this case, intoxicated drivers across the country cause thousands of wrecks every year that have tragic results. Alcohol is a depressant that slows your breathing rate as well as your heart rate. Moreover, it affects your cognitive skills such as your reaction time as well as your psychomotor skills, or your physical activities, which include your eye-hand coordination.

A person’s BAC, blood-alcohol content or concentration, is defined as the amount of alcohol in the blood. Once you consume alcohol it stays in your bloodstream until the liver breaks it down. Your BAC rises when you drink alcohol faster than the liver can break it down. The effects of consuming alcoholic beverages can appear as soon as 10 minutes and peak around 40 to 60 minutes after taking a drink, according to the National Institute of Health.

As your BAC rises, the body can react in various ways. According to the DUI Foundation, increased BAC levels can result in the following symptoms:

  • 0.03 – 0.59 percent: Weakened judgment, alertness, coordination and concentration.
  • 0.06 – 0.10 percent: Decreased reflexes, thought patterns, depth perception and vision.
  • 0.11 – 0.20 percent: Motor deficiencies, such as slurred speech and decreased reaction times and motor control.
  • 0.21 – 0.29 percent: Confusion, inability to understand what is going on around you, possible loss of consciousness and memory blackout.
  • 0.30 percent: Impaired bladder function, breathing and heart rate, depression and unconsciousness.
