50 Former Wrestlers Sue WWE

July 22, 2016

More than 50 former WWE Wrestlers have filed a lawsuit in Connecticut. They claim World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. is responsible for their long-term neurological damage. The lawsuit also alleges the company failed to properly address and care for their injuries over the years.

Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka, Joseph “Road Warrior Animal” Laurinaitis, and Paul “Mr. Wonderful” Orndorff are among the plaintiffs who filed suit Monday in federal court in Connecticut against Stamford-based WWE.

WWE denies the allegations. The former wrestlers’ attorney previously made false claims against the company, and the courts dismissed the lawsuits that were filed.

The plaintiffs allege they suffered concussions and other head trauma that resulted in long-term brain damage.

In 1983, authorities charged Snuka in connection with the death of his girlfriend near Allentown, Pennsylvania. Authorities have deemed him mentally incompetent to stand trial, with his defense partly attributing this to head trauma he suffered in the ring.

Repetitive or single impacts to the head can lead to concussions, commonly referred to as traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). These TBIs can result in a degenerative brain condition called chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). CTE occurs when repeated head trauma triggers the buildup of abnormal proteins in the brain known as “tau,” which interfere with normal brain function and ultimately lead to nerve cell death.

Early signs of CTE may include memory loss, confusion, disorientation, rage, and dizziness. As the disease progresses, more severe symptoms often emerge, including dementia, impaired judgment, tremors, and in some cases, speech impairment and deafness.
