Two Motorcyclists Killed in Dunnellon Crash

Two motorcyclists, including a 22-year-old Weeki Wachee man and a 27-year-old Citrus Springs man, were killed Saturday night after losing control of their vehicles.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the men exited the roadway and crashed through a fence and trees.

The crash occurred around 10:30 p.m. near Dunnellon High School on SW 180th Avenue Road.

The men were travelling southbound on SW 180th Avenue Road on separate bikes at a high rate of speed when they came to a curve that they failed to negotiate properly, causing them to veer onto the west shoulder, according to FHP. The Citrus Spring man’s bike struck a wire fence bordering the shoulder and the Weeki Wachee man’s bike hit a large wooden post supporting the fence. Both men were ejected from their sport bikes as they flipped, according to the FHP.

The Weeki Wachee man’s bike hit some trees, causing the bike to break into multiple pieces. The Citrus Spring man’s bike traveled farther south, and crashed through trees and underbrush before slamming into a large tree and breaking into numerous pieces.

According to the FHP report, the men and their bikes were found Sunday morning.

Both were wearing helmets, according to the report.

The sad reality about motorcycle crashes is that they are far too common, and far too deadly. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, within the past decade, an average of nearly 76,000 people across the country suffered serious injuries requiring hospitalization from motorcycle collisions. Nearly 3,900 motorcyclists in the U.S. have died as a result of fatal injuries suffered from motorcycle crashes. These numbers only continue to rise every year.
